Congratulations to Michael McGuirk on winning the Newcastle District Championship, after defeating Alex Mehan in the playoff for the title. The tournament commenced on Monday 9 August at Panthers Newcastle and was a 7 Round Swiss event with one round being played each week at The Club, with a time control of 1.5 hours per player and a guillotine finish with games commencing at 7pm.
The field listed below comprised of thirteen players, the best turnout in many years for a local major tournament: Kevin Black, Bernie O'Riordan, Dmitri Kavetski, Michael McGuirk, Ron Groenhout, Doug Carey, Alex Mehan, Jay Mamidenna, Shaun Booth, Andrew Robinson, Roger Lowe, Hermann Scherrer and Trevor McIlveen.
At the end of seven rounds Michael McGuirk and Alex Mehan were both locked on 5.5 points with the prize money being split between the two players. A playoff for the title took place on Monday 20 September, with Michael McGuirk winning the overall Championship in a hard fought encounter with Alex. Michael has also proven to be a worthy Champion by winning the City of Newcastle Chamionship earlier in the year. Other scores from the tournament are as follows: Bernie O'Riordan 5, Kevin Black and Ron Groenhout 4.5, Dmitri Kavetski, Doug Carey and Jay Mamidenna 4, Shaun Booth, Andrew Robinson and Hermann Scherrer 3, Trevor McIlveen 2 and Roger Lowe on 1 point respectively.
Congratulations to Jay Mamidenna who won the best player in the Reserves Division with 4 from 7.
There were some upsets in the tournament, and a couple of minor hick-ups in the "less than five minute time control" at the end of some games. The tournament was played in good faith overall and players walked away friends at the end of each round. Bernie O'Riordan eventually put Doug Carey to rest, whilst Kevin Black and Dmitri Kavetski's game was a hard fight for both players. Michael McGuirk and Alex Mehan had an interesting struggle with material imbalance, before Alex sealed his own fate with a rash pawn move. Shaun Booth and Ron Groenhout's game was played on Wednesday evening with Ron eventually getting a point, although "not pretty" as he described it! The tournament was played in good spirit with no disputes.
The Newcastle District Championship, affectionately known as "The District", commenced at Panthers Newcastle on Monday 10 August and ran for consecutive Monday evenings until its completion on Monday 21 September. Congratulations to Bernie O'Riordan who won the competition. Thankyou to all players who competed, making it a very successful tournament indeed. Thanks to all players who passed their games on for publication. Some of these games were published in the Saturday edition of the Newcasstle Herald. This gave the tournament excellent coverage to the wider general public and helped promote the Royal Game in the local region. As many games as possible from the recently completed tournament are published below. Players should note that not all games from the tournament were published, with some of the more common reasons listed below. The general standard of scoring the game has risen in this tournament along with the standard of play. Once again, many thanks to all who competed.
On a positive, the game score standard has improved immensely in this tournament with a lot more games available for publication. Round 4 saw a complete set of games being published for that round.

Held at Panthers Newcastle on Monday 3 August, congratulations to former South Australian player Tristan Stevens, who cleaned up the local opposition by winning the Newcastle District Lightning Championship with a picket fence score of 7 from 7. Although only a smallish field of eight players competed, Tristran eclipsed the local establishment by a clear 1.5 points, ahead of his nearest rival Dmitri Kavetski on 5.5. Then came Alex Mehan on 4, Michael McGuirk & Bernie O'Riordan 3.5, Andrew Robinson 3, Shaun Booth 1.5 and Doug Carey 0.
