The 2010 NSW Country Teams Championships took place on 4 & 5 December at Panthers Newcastle. Ten teams competed in this years event with Newcastle University (WIM Heather Richards, Bernie O'Riordan & Toby Coates) securing victory for the second year in a row. Unfortunately a very strong Gosford team (FM John Curtis, Zach Berry-Porter & Keith Hogan) that would have provided some serious competition to the Newcastle University side was forced to withdraw at the eleventh hour due to unforeseen circumstances.
Gosford however was still able to field one team (Gary Losh, Norm Greenwood & Neil Clark) that did exceptionally well by securing the Reserves Shield. Other regional teams travelled from Dubbo (Trevor Bemrose, Jashint Maharaj & Alex Aich) and Coffs Harbour (Alan Tankel, Sam Brown & Jason Goodson). Mike Canfell travelled from Armidale to compete in an adhoc Barbarians side (Mike Canfell, Doug Carey from Newcastle & Keith Farrell from Gosford).
The other five teams that competed were all Newcastle based. These were Newcastle Coalfields (Michael McGuirk, Trent Parker from Picton & Alex Mehan), Newcastle 1 (Ian Dickson, Phil Tan & Graeme Deacon), Newcastle 2 (Dave Campkin, Ron Groenhout & Robert Muller), Newcastle 3 (Andrew Robinson, Terry Meng & Roger Lowe) and Hamilton Oasis (Jay Mamidenna on Saturday, Ben Martin on Sunday, Mohammad Raza & Trevor McIlveen).
Havoc was caused at the commencement of play in Round 4 on Sunday, when some players, including the Director of Play, Peter Cassettari, were caught in traffic due to the Toy Run held every year around this time. Special time dispenstaion was granted to these players, with Heather Richards just making the time control for her first move with less than 5 minutes on her clock!
Final placings are as follows: Newcastle University (15), Newcastle Coalfields (12.5), Gosford & Coffs Harbour (11.5), Barbarians & Dubbo (8), Newcastle 1 (7.5), Newcastle 2 (7), Newcastle 3 (3) and Hamilton Oasis (2).
Three players were undefeated and scored Best Individual Board Prizes. These were WIM Heather Richards (Newcastle University) with 5 wins and a draw to score 5.5 from 6 points and received Best Prize for Board 1. Bernie O'Riordan (Newcastle University) had 4 wins and 2 draws to get 5 from 6 and was top player on Board 2, whilst Alex Mehan (Newcastle Coalfields) scored a picket fence with 6 from 6 and was best player on Board 3.
Two Barbarian players, Mike Canfell and Doug Carey, as well as Norm Greenwood from Gosford, all deserve special mention. Mike canfell was undefeated on 4 points with 4 draws and 2 wins. Doug Carey was also undefeated with 3 wins and 3 draws to score 4.5 from 6. Norm Greenwood (Gosford) also had 3 wins and 3 draws to score 4.5 from 6. The thing to note about these players are that they are in their "twilight years", but still regularly compete in chess tournaments.
Peter Cassettari did an excellent job as DOP, with the tournament running exrtemely smoothly with only minor disputes or queries from some boards.
