The Inaugural Newcastle District Chess Association Kings Gambit Tournament held on Saturday 3 September 2011 at the Galliploli Legion Club in Hamilton, although small in numbers, was won in fine style by Sydney player Michael Morris with 6.5 from 7. Because of transport difficulties due to NSW State Rail Corporation doing track repairs and upgrading between Sydney and Newcastle on the Saturday that the tournament was being run, some players had to have a half point bye for the first round because they could not make the scheduled starting time of 10.30 am. Michael was one of these players. Michael had 6 wins and a bye for his six and a half points. An excellent effort indeed.
Second Place went to Kevin Black on 5.5 from 7. The Reserve Division (Under 1500) was won by Shaun Booth on 4.5 from 7 and there was a three way split for second in the Reserves, with Mike Weltner, Norm Greenwood and Keith Farrell all scoring 50% with 3.5 from 7.
The field consisted of 18 players with sight impaired (blind player) Alex Momet being part of the starting lineup as well. Players who travelled from regional areas are indicated below. Michael McGuirk was the Arbiter and Greg Wilson the Tournament Orgainiser / Gopher. Thanks to Shaun Booth, Doug Carey, Trevor McIlveen and Ron Groenhout who assisted with general Tournament setting up as well as helping Alex Momet.
A condition of entry was that the games be scored even with the Rapid Play time control of 15 minutes per player guillotine finish (basically half hour games). This did NOT prove to be a problem. The reason behind the scoring of the games was that because this was a specialised tournament, games would be lost forever if not scored, and some nice wins would never be published under Rapid Play rules (no need to score). The players accepted this odd practice of having to score in Rapid Play, and once explained, the players just got on with business at the board. As a result, a fairly accurate record of the games will be made available as soon as time permits, with games from the various rounds being published as they become available. I'm sure that players will be happy at their wins, draws and losses are there for publication and historical record.
There were only 7 games in the first round as three players could not make the required start of play, leaving Nathan Masterson with the bye. All the remaining rounds had 9 games, making a total of 61 games for the tournament.
A good time was had by all. The only mishap being that there were not enough pies, pasties and sausage rolls available for consumption by hungry chess players!
