A Selection from the Catchfire Press book... 'BACKYARD COSMOS: New and Selected Poems' by Robin Loftus
Blokes Smoko. They lounge against the fence legs sprawled across the footpath dirty scuffed boots stubbies bulging arms bronzed heads on necks thick as trees grow from their navy Bond's athletics. A girl spike-haired, blonded, styled like a wet Aussie sheep is lewdly chiacked as she tittups by. Smoko. They guffaw abd punch each other's arms, showing off, real tough, push back their battered Akubras then fall oddly silent. Taking long drags on their rollies they watch the blue smoke drift away to the mountains heroes they're riding fine bay stallions like the man in the Marlboro ad. © Robin Loftus kicking the kitchen blues this is no time
to stay surly in the kitchen
leave the spuds
to their own spuddish devices
let the carrots and broccoli sulk.
come to the edge
of the balcony
love
breathe with me
listen
to the night.
